Since the 1990s when the Indian economy opened up, India been experiencing steady economic growth; in fact it is supposed to be amongst the ten fastest growing economies in the world. A large part of this economic boom is IT driven. In a few short years India has become a leader in software related technologies. It is also the most desirable destination for offshore outsourcing of IT jobs from western countries. While cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad have triggered this IT revolution; new IT hubs are coming up all over the country like Cochin, Kolkata and Coimbatore.
Situated on the banks of the river Hooghly, Kolkata is the capital of the eastern state of West Bengal and the financial centre of east India. A bustling metropolis that prides itself on its rich cultural heritage, it is trying to shake off its reputation of poverty and stride towards a new dawn of economic prosperity. Though a latecomer to the IT boom, it has caught on fast thanks to full government support. The government has declared the IT sector as a public utility service thereby excusing it from the frequent ‘bandhs’ that plague the city. A reverse brain drain has started with not only the talented and qualified Bengalis returning but also similarly qualified people from neighbouring states coming to Kolkata. Many Indian IT giants like Wipro and TCS have set up shop there while existing MNCs like IBM are expanding operations. Infoparks are being set up in the developing Rajarhat area with the existing one in Salt Lake City full to the brim.
Kolkata has a good reservoir of engineering graduates from nearby IIT Kharagpur and the many prestigious colleges that dot the city’s landscape. It is well connected by air to most of the major destinations in the world and the government is doing its best to improve the existing infrastructure. From simple application support to the more complex Web Design Kolkata is gradually moving up the outsourcing value chain. |
